Hello all. I recently completed a class project that required the use of different computer applications relating to fitness in the community. My group came up with a plan to incorporate fitness and nutrition along with surfing to better our university and/or coastal community surfers. Although surfing is an extreme workout in itself, there are ways to become more fit on land to promote optimal performance. Through exercise, one can attain better cardiovascular and muscle endurance and strength. In regards to surfing, endurance can help one stay out in the water longer without fatigue. Muscular strength can help one propel themselves through the water with greater power and force to catch bigger waves. Perhaps one of the greatest challenges for any surfer is balance control. Balance can be enhanced by certain methods such as balance boards, resistance balls, and plyometrics. The core and stabilizer muscles contribute the most in one's balance. Our group also found that nutrition goes hand and hand in becoming a better surfer. A surfer expends a lot of calories, both aerobic ans anaerobic, in the water. The best way to provide ample fuel for the body is to find "fuel efficient foods" that are balance in carbohydrates, proteins, fats, ect. It is found that foods help prepare the body before as well as after entering the water. For example, a surfer wants to intake more carbohydrates a day or so before entering the water. When a surfer is finished with his/her session, more protein should be consumed as to recover the muscles from fatigue.
These quick tips just scratch the surface in becoming a better surfer. There are many sources that go into detail in areas such as stretching, aerobic vs. anaerobic exercises, strength training, core training, ect. Also there are many nutritional sites that break down the specific caloric expenditures of certain sports such as surfing. So if you surf or know someone who wants to better themselves as a surfer, take a look at the benefits of proper nutrition and exercise. I think you'll be amazed at what you can find.
